Deck the Haul: Oprah’s Favorite Things Final Gift Tally

It wasn’t just the unsuspecting audience members who flipped for Oprah’s two-part, final Favorite Things gift-giving year-end special. Featured brands can also expect a boost in holiday sales thanks to the halo effect of the Winfrey wand.[more]

The first part, which aired Friday, surprised an audience of non-profit and volunteer workers with gifts including a Sony Bravia 3D HDTV and a one-week cruise, while today’s episode gifted the audience (who’d just seen the audience from the prior taping float out on a Favorite Things cloud) with arguably an even bigger goodie bag that included an iPad and a 2012 Volkswagen.

“Words cannot describe what I feel for this magnificent device. I really think it’s the best invention of the century so far,” Oprah said about the iPad. “Thanks to my iPad, I now read about four newspapers a day.” She also uses it to keep a journal and watch movies, TV shows and the news. “I write my column for O magazine on the iPad way before the deadline because I love writing on it so much.”

The Volkswagen is also a coup. As Winfrey’s website notes, “For only the second time in Volkswagen history, the iconic Beetle has been totally redesigned for 2012, inside and out. The project is so top secret, the only prototype of its kind was flown to Harpo Studios from Germany. No one outside of VW has seen the new Beetle, but Oprah was given special permission.”

She commented on-air: “This is one powerful, sophisticated, sexy Beetle. All of you in this audience will be the first people in the world to own one when it makes its debut next year!”

It wasn’t all about receiving but also giving, as each audience member also received a sum to make a charitable donation, via Kiva or DonorsChoose.org. “I would like to say, I know that we are a parody,” she commented in today’s special. “You all are a Saturday Night Live skit in here.” But, she went on, “It’s not about the stuff, although you’re gonna love driving that Beetle. It’s about hope, and knowing that something magical and joyful can happen to you when you least expect it.”
