Triscuit Promotes Real-Life Farmville


“It’s happening in backyards, front porches, and rooftop terraces.” Not BBQing — small-scale growing of herbs and vegetables, a phenomenon that Triscuit is branding as “home farming” and others call urban farming or just plain “gardening.” 

Planting (sorry) the idea by distributing free seeds last year to encourage consumers to get growing, the Nabisco-owned cracker created a microsite, Home Farming, as a social hub. This year, it’s adding local events in New York, Tampa and Los Angeles on what it’s calling Home Farming Day on April 12th, which will including events such as a live “plantathon” in Manhattan and “groundbreakings” of community gardens in the other two cities.

As Mashable reports, the nascent community has signed up more than 14,000 urban and suburban gardeners — er, “home farmers,” a term that even made Triscuit’s consultant on the project, Paul James (who will be at the New York event on April 12th and interact with the other two sites via video streaming), uneasy at first.[more]

As James blogged a year ago: “let me say a word about the term home farming. When I first heard it, I thought it was a tad awkward. After all, I’d always described the process of growing vegetables and herbs as a form of gardening. But the more I thought about it, the more it grew on me. Growing edible crops, whether in your backyard or on your balcony, is a form of farming really. And calling it that distinguishes it from growing flowers and shrubs and trees and so on…”
