The most famous fashion doll in the world, Barbie, is currently taking offers for her Dreamhouse Malibu mansion. Now, Mattel has issued an open invitation to literally step inside her world with Barbie The Dreamhouse Experience.
Two life-sized houses—complete with pink elevators, a walk-in “glitterizer” and a “diamond” ring display—will open next month in south Florida at Sawgrass Mills and for European fans, in Berlin, Germany.
Why Germany? It turns out that Barbie has roots in the country. American businesswoman Ruth Handler is credited with the creation of Barbie for her daughter, who in the 1950’s, like all little girls, had only paper dolls or baby dolls to play with. Handler convinced her husband Elliot, a co-founder of Mattel to create an adult-bodied doll based on a German doll called Bild Lilli. Barbie made her debut in 1959, followed by the reveal of the original Barbie Dreamhouse in 1962.[more]
Fast forward to 2013, where Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology bracelets and LED touch screens let fans create their own experience, including digitally “trying on” Barbie’s famous fashions.
The Dreamhouse Experience was designed, developed and built by EMS Entertainment, a global leader in live exhibition, as a real-world extension of the character’s digital realty adventure. The life-size display uses more than 20 pounds of glitter and 100 gallons of pink paint to decorate the 25,000 square foot Berlin and 10,000 square foot Florida Dreamhouses.
“We’ve paid incredible attention to detail and created a completely interactive experience by using the latest technology to personalize each fan’s visit to the Dreamhouse,” stated Christoph Rahofer, president and CEO of EMS Entertainment “Together with our partner Mattel, we are building a first of its kind experience for Barbie fans around the world.”
Barbie’s friends, family and pets are featured throughout with animation, photography and interactive games, and more than 350 Barbie dolls and other memorabilia will be on display and available for purchase.
The exhibit is scheduled to run through the end of 2013. A Megastar VIP Package, $29.99, includes VIP Access line entrance to The Dreamhouse, a personal bracelet and participation in the Fashion Runway Stage.
“Barbie’s life-sized Dreamhouses will provide fans a new way to interact and engage with the Barbie brand while providing a memorable experience,” said Lori Pantel, VP global marketing for Barbie.
Mattel remains the global leader in the design, manufacture and marketing of toys. With their 28,000 employees in 43 countries and product sales in more than 150 nations, their mantra, “Creating the Future of Play,” holds steady with the latest interactive Barbie Dreamhouse.
