Announcing Our 15th Annual Product Placement Award Nominees

It was the best of nominations. It was the worst of nominations. We now know the contenders for both the best in film in 2015 and the year’s worst as both the Oscars and the Razzies released the nominees for their respective awards. It also means we’re a month away from brandchannel’s annual Brandcameo Product Placement Awards — our 15th annual recognition of the best and worst of the year.

For 15 years we have tracked product placement and brand appearances in every #1 film at the US box office and for the last ten of those years we’ve hosted the Product Placement Awards. This year’s awards will be announced February 22. (Last year’s Product Placement Awards can be found here.)

The nominees for this year’s Brandcameo awards…

Magic Mike XXL’s PepsiCo products scene was one of 2015’s most memorable and celebrated (even if the movie itself was not).

One of the moments fans latched on to more than any other from Amy Schumer’s 2015 rom-com Trainwreck was sneaking Bandit brand boxed wine into a movie theater. While promoting the movie Schumer (of course) shared her tips for sneaking boxed wine into theaters.

Baskin-Robbins always finds out” was probably the funniest line from the funniest scene in Ant-Man. (Even funnier than the Thomas the Train scene.)

The plot of Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip centers on the American Idol. The Road Chip (a Razzie nominee) was produced by Fox 2000 and distributed by 20th Century Fox and it hit theaters Dec 18, 2015; coincidentally, American Idol’s 15th and final season debuted Jan 6, 2016 on Fox.

One of the best-reviewed Bollywood movies of 2015 was also stuffed with brands. Piku‘s product placement included PriyagoldSnakker chocolate bars, Himalayan Water and Jaypee Greens golf resort. The heartwarming road trip movie also boasted an official brand “safety partner”: CEAT SUV Tyres. The stars of the Piku also appeared in companion ads for CEAT.

Is it out of line to say that the Harley-Davidson Livewire electric motorcycle in Avengers: Age of Ultron had more onscreen personality than some of stars?

One, or maybe more, of these product placements—along with many others from movies like Spectre, Entourage, The Martian, Hot Tub Time Machine 2, Taken 3, and Ex Machina—will receive an award for best, worst or most successful product placement.
