buy 50 First Dates
50 First Dates
Date:
13-26 Feb., 2004
Studio: Sony
Weekend gross: US$60.3 M
Featured brands: Aquafresh, Fiji, Ford, Honolulu Star-Bulletin, Johnson & Johnson, Matsumoto, Nike, Original Penguin, Pepsi, Reese's, S.O.S., Seadoo, Sony, Spam, Suave, Volkswagen
Comments: E.T. famously loved the pieces, but Reese’s also comes in cups. Our hero plays the ham for Spam.

buy Alien vs. Predator
Alien vs. Predator
Date:
13-19 Aug., 2004
Studio: Fox
Weekend gross: US$38.3 M
Featured brands: Compaq, KYOCERA Finecam, Pepsi, Scientific American
Comments: Where Coke got in on battling horror legends (Freddy vs. Jason), Pepsi gets in on the sci-fi superstar scuffle. Surprisingly, Pepsi’s one bottle cap was more powerful than a table full of cans and bottles.
Did we miss something?
buy Along Came Polly
Along Came Polly
Date:
16-22 Jan., 2004
Studio: Universal
Weekend gross: US$32.5 M
Featured brands: Aflac, Bajaj, Berkshire Network/GMAC Real Estate, Dummies, Fiji, Forbes, Mellon Bank, Plantronics, RE/MAX, RISKMASTER, Ruffles, Wall Street Journal
Comments: Probably one of very, very few opportunities RISKMASTER insurance software will ever have for film placement, and they really took advantage of it. Maybe too much.
Did we miss something?
buy Barbershop 2
Barbershop 2
Date:
6-12 Feb., 2004
Studio: MGM
Weekend gross: US$24.2 M
Featured brands: Bally Total Fitness, Blockbuster, Girbaud, GMC, Jamba Juice, Jordan, Kinko's, NBC, Newsweek, Pepsi, Phat Farm, Subway
Comments: No real brand standouts, but every brand appearance in Barbershop 2 is the definition of high and tight, like the perfect fade.
Did we miss something?
buy Collateral
Collateral
Date:
6-12 Aug., 2004
Studio: Dreamworks
Weekend gross: US$24.7 M
Featured brands: Amnesty International, Aquafina, Bacardi, Cadillac Escalade, Coca-Cola, Compaq, Coors, Craftsman, Fortune, Freightliner, GMC, Greenpeace, Holiday Inn, HP, Jeep, Mercedes, Michelob, Miller, Motorola, Nokia, Oxfam, PNY Technologies, Save the Whales, TAG Heuer, Thomson West
Comments: Mostly background stuff, but Collateral’s long taxi Cruise features booze by Bacardi, though it’s only a car-top ad and everyone stays dead sober.
Did we miss something?
buy Dawn of the Dead
Dawn of the Dead
Date:
19-25 Mar., 2004
Studio: Universal
Weekend gross: US$26.7 M
Featured brands: Aquafina, Best Buy, Cosmopolitan, Dairy Queen, Magnum (gun), Nike, Panasonic, Pepsi, PUMA, Roots, Toyota
Comments: How does one shoot half a film inside a mall yet not feature many brands? Make them up. Brands such as Pottery Barn look-alike Metropolis feature heavily in the film, including clothing store Gaylen Ross (named for a star in the original 1978 film). Coffeehouse Hallowed Grounds is a stand-in for Starbucks, which reportedly refused to appear in the film. Pepsi and Panasonic get obvious yet seamless placement amid the chaos. The Roots store is the only brand giveaway that this was filmed in Toronto.
Did we miss something?
buy Dodgeball
Dodgeball
Date:
18-24 Jun., 2004
Studio: Fox
Weekend gross: US$30.0 M
Featured brands: Airwalk, Apple, ASICS, Bellagio Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas, Budweiser, Circus Circus Casino, Cirque du Soleil, Ergoline, ESPN, Fiji, FOX, Fred Perry, Girl Scouts, Glaceau, Learning Annex, Lumber Liquidators, Marriott, Monte Carlo, Monte Carlo Casino, Nautilus, Nesquik, Nike, Omaha Steaks, Pepsi, Polo Ralph Lauren, Pontiac, PowerBar, Snapple, SoBe, Street Glow, Suzuki, Toyota, Tropicana, Under Armour, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Yoo-hoo!
Comments: The only thing more surprising about the enormous amount of product placement in Dodgeball is that the best of it was had for free. Both Under Armor and Vitaminwater, which make very prominent, lengthy appearances, reportedly only supplied product in exchange for their roles. Ditto for ESPN, Nautilus and Urban Golf Gear. And Fox Sports piggybacks on its production studio.
Did we miss something?
buy Exorcist: The Beginning
Exorcist: The Beginning
Date:
20-26 Aug., 2004
Studio: Warner Bros
Weekend gross: US$18.2 M
Featured brands: East African Airways, Oxford University
Comments: An Oxford education continues to signify intelligence, no questions asked. East African Air dissolved in 1977.
Did we miss something?
buy Fahrenheit 9/11
Fahrenheit 9/11
Date:
25 Jun-1 Jul., 2004
Studio: Lion’s Gate
Weekend gross: US$23.9 M
Featured brands: 24 Hour Fitness, 7-Up, Abercrombie & Fitch, AirTran, al Jazeera, Altoids, American Innovations, Amstel, AT&T, Borders, Carlyle Group, CBS, Chili's, Citibank, CNN, Continental, Cool Whip, DHL, Disney, Dr. Seuss, Dunkin' Donuts, Enron, FOX, Habitat for Humanity, Halliburton, Harken, Houston Chronicle, Icarian, Jo-Ann Fabrics, Kalmar, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Los Angeles Times, Microsoft, Mister Frostee, Mountain Dew, NBC, New York Times, Nike, Original Penguin, Poland Spring, Ritz-Carlton, Roget's, Ryder, Spectrum 7, Unical, United Defense, University of Oklahoma, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, Walmart, Washington Post, Watergate Hotel, Zytech
Comments: Many other brands appear too quickly and too briefly to note. As a documentary, it shows just how branded the ’’real’’ world is. Halliburton’s placement may be the worst of 2004.
Did we miss something?
buy Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Date:
4-17 Jun., 2004
Studio: Warner Bros
Weekend gross: US$128.6 M
Featured brands: none
Comments: While featuring no Muggle brands, the fictional products of the Harry Potter saga (i.e. Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans), really are available for purchase.
Did we miss something?
buy Hellboy
Hellboy
Date:
2-8 Apr., 2004
Studio: Sony / Revolution
Weekend gross: US$23.1 M
Featured brands: Baby Ruth, Budweiser, Oakley, PowerBar, Red Bull, SoBe, USA Today
Comments: Baby Ruth, the choice of earthbound demons everywhere. Bud Light’s graceless placement reminds us of Burger King in Scooby-Doo 2 (not a good thing).
Did we miss something?
buy Hero (Ying xiong)
Hero (Ying xiong)
Date:
27 Aug-9 Sep., 2004
Studio: Miramax
Weekend gross: US$26.8 M
Featured brands: none
Comments: Some say the stunningly photographed landscapes should be part of China Tourism’s promotional package. Plus, our overseas agents say that Hero’s original release did contain a brand—a Motorola radio the crew left behind.
Did we miss something?
buy I, Robot
I, Robot
Date:
16-22 Jul., 2004
Studio: Fox
Weekend gross: US$52.2 M
Featured brands: Audi, Converse, Dos Equis, FedEx, JVC, MV Agusta, Panasonic, Prudential, U.S. Robotics
Comments: I, Robot’s Audi: sci-fi shades of Minority Report’s Lexus. FedEx robots deliver the goods, even in the future. Vancouver’s Ovaltine Café makes a prominent appearance here.
Did we miss something?
buy Kill Bill Vol. 2
Kill Bill Vol. 2
Date:
16-22 Apr., 2004
Studio: Miramax
Weekend gross: US$25.1 M
Featured brands: Bimbo, French's, Lucky Charms, Motorola, Pontiac Firebird, Rolex, Sol, Spam, Volkswagen
Comments: At the hands of Tarantino, the ’70s Pontiac Firebird continues its resurrection as the cool car for hot women. This follows similar Firebird appearances in 2003’s Charlie’s Angels 3 and Identity.
Did we miss something?
buy Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events
Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events
Date:
17-23 Dec., 2004
Studio: Paramount
Weekend gross: US$30.1 M
Featured brands: Lux, OshKosh B'Gosh, Oxydol, Pelikan Ink, Royal, Sanka, Scrabble, Tatra
Comments: The highly imaginative world of Snicket includes mostly antique brands that lend to the obscure settings. Sanka figures in one joke that doesn’t reflect on the brand so well. And as a surprise, insurance company Aflac's signature duck appears. Though it doesn’t instantly identify the brand, Aflac did reach an agreement with the filmmakers for its inclusion. Seeing the duck made us think of Aflac, even though we dismissed the placement as surely coincidental.
Did we miss something?
buy Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
Date:
19 Dec-15 Jan., 2004
Studio: New Line
Weekend gross: US$165.6 M
Featured brands: none
Comments: Given all the attention on the film’s production and its director’s nationalism, it could very easily be argued that the whole trilogy is a huge and very good placement for New Zealand.
Did we miss something?
buy Man on Fire
Man on Fire
Date:
23-29 Apr., 2004
Studio: Fox
Weekend gross: US$22.8 M
Featured brands: Boots Cigarettes, brother, Casio, Chevrolet, Coca-Cola, Corona, Fanta, Ford, Jack Daniel's, Mercedes, Motorola, Nokia, PUMA, Reforma Newspaper, Sol, Speedo, Sprite, Tabasco, Volkswagen Beetle
Comments: Men on fire drink Jack Daniel’s... lots of it. Denzel makes being a Jack-soaked alcoholic former assasin look cool.
Did we miss something?
buy Mean Girls
Mean Girls
Date:
30 Apr-6 May., 2004
Studio: Paramount
Weekend gross: US$24.4 M
Featured brands: Amnesty International, Apple, Barnes & Noble, Burberry, Cadillac, Chase, Cheetos, Coca-Cola, Dasani, Doritos, Dunkin' Donuts, Ecko Unltd, ESPN, Fendi, Ford, Gatorade, Girls Gone Wild, Honda, Jeep, Kleenex, Lacoste, Lexus, Louis Vuitton, Nike, Northwestern University, Perrier, Planned Parenthood, Red Bull, Roots, S. Pellegrino, Sears, Sprite, T.G.I. Friday's, Taco Bell, Toaster Strudel, True Religion Jeans, Visa
Comments: Mean means Coca-Cola. And the meanest means Lexus. Thanks to new mega-star Lindsay Lohan, scenes with these mean girl brands definitely reached the teens.
Did we miss something?
buy Meet the Fockers
Meet the Fockers
Date:
24 Dec-13 Jan., 2005
Studio: Universal
Weekend gross: US$116.3 M
Featured brands: AARP, ADT, Apple, BCBG, Chevron, Chicco, Fleetwood, Ford, Google, Graco, Jaguar, Liberator, Miami Herald, Moët & Chandon, Mount Gay, Orville Redenbacher, Panasonic, Pepperidge Farm, Pontiac, Rand McNally, S. Pellegrino, Sealy Posturepedic, Sephora, Signing Time!, Skippy, Starbucks, Sun-Maid, Tanqueray, Tootsie Roll, Underwood, VIASYS, VW Thing
Comments: Apple is by far the most obvious brand in Fockers, benefiting from a lavish placement early in the film. Baby products from brands Graco and Chicco see some screen time and Tanqueray is the drink of choice. But the sexual aid products made by Liberator receive our nomination for best Focker brand.
Did we miss something?
buy National Treasure
National Treasure
Date:
19 Nov-9 Dec., 2004
Studio: Buena Vista
Weekend gross: US$84.3 M
Featured brands: adidas, Aquafina, Belstaff, Cadillac, Cisco, Converse, Ferrari, Georgetown University, GMC, HP, Internet Explorer, JVC, Koala Bear Kare, Krazy Glue, M.I.T., Motorola, New York Yankees, Nikon, Rapiscan, Rolex, Sorel, The North Face, Urban Outfitters, Verizon, Visa, Yahoo!
Comments: National Treasure promotes more than American history. HP finds its way nicely into many scenes and both Visa and Rolex play key roles in their respective scenes. But it’s Aquafina that leaves us speechless; you can see why for yourself here and here.
Did we miss something?
buy Ocean’s Twelve
Ocean’s Twelve
Date:
10-16 Dec., 2004
Studio: Warner Bros.
Weekend gross: US$39.2 M
Featured brands: Ambien, Amstel, Amtrak, Apple, Arsenal, Aston Martin, Bee, Bellagio Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas, Belstaff, Bombay Sapphire, Bose, Boston Red Sox, Budweiser, Bulgari, Daimler, Dell, Epcot, Faberge, Fiat, Finlandia, Ford, Glaceau, Grey Goose, Grolsch, High Tech Magnum, J&B, Jaguar, Junior Mints, Louvre, Moët & Chandon, Museo Nacional del Prado, New York Yankees, Persol, Peugeot, Philip B, Philips, Range Rover, Red Bull, S. Pellegrino, Selsun Blue, Siemens, Smartwater, SpongeBob SquarePants, Tate Museum
Comments: Catherine Zeta-Jones makes a call on Brad Pitt’s shiny Siemens phone. We see the aftermath of a party obviously fueled by copious amounts of Red Bull. It took us forever to figure out those were Persol glasses. And there’s a Yankees/Red Sox joke only for those in the know.
Did we miss something?
buy Resident Evil: Apocalypse
Resident Evil: Apocalypse
Date:
10-16 Sep., 2004
Studio: Sony / Screen Gems
Weekend gross: US$23.7 M
Featured brands: Chevrolet, CIBC, Coca-Cola, Dodge, Magnum (gun), Montblanc, Pizza Pizza, Sheraton, Sony, Sony Ericsson, Sony VAIO
Comments: From Handycams to Vaio laptops, Sony is definitely the brand of choice for battling zombies and producing movies about them. The film’s fictional location Raccoon City looks a good deal like Toronto thanks to the presence of Pizza Pizza and the CIBC building.
Did we miss something?
buy Scooby-Doo 2
Scooby-Doo 2
Date:
26 Mar-1 Apr., 2004
Studio: Warner Bros
Weekend gross: US$29.4 M
Featured brands: Burger King, Fuji, Gatorade, Indian, POM, Popular Science, Starbucks
Comments: A computer-animated talking dog is the second most clumsy thing in this film after Burger King’s placement. And though we still don’t really know where it came from, that Indian motorcycle is hot.
Did we miss something?
buy Shark Tale
Shark Tale
Date:
1-21 Oct., 2004
Studio: DreamWorks
Weekend gross: US$100.9 M
Featured brands: Beluga, Sony PlayStation, Turtle Wax
Comments: Brands are flooding children’s films despite apparent thematic barriers. Coral-Cola (a.k.a. Coke) gets front and center treatment. DreamWorks’ placements from Shrek 2 appear again: Olde Knavery=Old Wavy; Burger Prince=Fish King; Gap Queen=Gup. Krispy Kreme’s “Kruppy Kreme” is easily the most jarring placement. (Donuts? Underwater?) A few real, already sea-friendly brands appear also. But then there’s PlayStation…
Did we miss something?
buy Shrek 2
Shrek 2
Date:
21 May-3 Jun., 2004
Studio: DreamWorks
Weekend gross: US$180.2 M
Featured brands: none
Comments: While free of “real” brands, this land of make-believe does make fun. From Olde Knavery and Versarchery to Farbucks coffee, Baskin Robinhood and Burger Prince, many jokes require knowledge of non-fairytale brands. Shrek 2 begins DreamWorks' brand/joke trend, which continues in Shark Tale. Mike Meyers, the voice of Shrek, also did this well in Cat in the Hat.
Did we miss something?
buy Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
Date:
17-23 Sep., 2004
Studio: Paramount
Weekend gross: US$16.2 M
Featured brands: Coca-Cola, Dubble Bubble, Hallicrafters, Leica
Comments: New York never looked so good... literally. If we didn’t live here already, we’d want to visit.
Did we miss something?
buy Spider-Man 2
Spider-Man 2
Date:
2-15 Jul., 2004
Studio: Sony
Weekend gross: US$133.4 M
Featured brands: Bloomberg, Bloomingdale's, BMW, Burger King, Canon, Columbia University, D'Agostino, Dr. Pepper, eBay, Fritos, Joe's Pizza, Lumber Liquidators, Maker's Mark, Mercedes, Mirinda, NASA, New York Mets, New York Yankees, Nike, Pop-Tarts, Rolaids, Steinway & Sons, Sweet 'N Low
Comments: In New York Spider-Man gets exposed, as does Joe’s (Pizza). A small local parlor, Joe’s people report that kids visit speaking of Spidey. A perfect example of how prominent placement in a blockbuster can make even the little guy immortal. Note: The US version's Dr. Pepper is substituted for Mirinda in the international release.
Did we miss something?
buy The Bourne Supremacy
The Bourne Supremacy
Date:
23-29 Jul., 2004
Studio: Universal
Weekend gross: US$52.5 M
Featured brands: Aeroflot, Audi, Avaya, BMW, Borjomi Mineral Water, BOSCH, Bose, Burger King, Chrysler, Cisco, Cubix, Handspring, HP, Hyundai, Jeep, Lada, Lay's, MAN, Mercedes, Motorola, NFL, Nokia, Panasonic, Saab, Schultheiss, Siemens, Sony, TAG Heuer, Tatra, Treo, Volga, Westin, Zeiss
Comments: Originally we thought the Lay’s potato chip prevalence in India was dubious. But after hearing from our readers, it appears the appearance of Lay's adheres to reality.
Did we miss something?
buy The Butterfly Effect
The Butterfly Effect
Date:
23-29 Jan., 2004
Studio: New Line
Weekend gross: US$17.0 M
Featured brands: Cap'n Crunch, Century 21, Hustler, Independent, Lay's, Nike, Nintendo, Pepsi, Tommy Hilfiger, U-Haul, Vans
Comments: Good brand integration all around.
Did we miss something?
buy The Forgotten
The Forgotten
Date:
24-30 Sep., 2004
Studio: Sony / Revolution
Weekend gross: US$21.0 M
Featured brands: ABC Carpet & Home, Apple, Armani, Bacardi, Bloomingdale's, Chase, Coca-Cola, Duane Reade, Ford, Geico, Jansport, Jeep, Kleenex, Lay's, Major League Baseball, Nathan's Famous, National Enquirer, New York Mets, New York Rangers, Nissan, Oreo, Palm, Panasonic, Philips, Rold Gold, S. Pellegrino, Subaru, TWA, Volvo
Comments: Volvo is the car for the affluent mother concerned about safety or extraterrestrials. Apple’s prevalence continues to defy real-life ownership statistics. And the Mets have a fan somewhere behind the scenes.
Did we miss something?
buy The Grudge
The Grudge
Date:
22 Oct-4 Nov., 2004
Studio: Sony
Weekend gross: US$60.9 M
Featured brands: Fuji, Hills Bros, UFO Noodles
Comments: Non-Japanese speakers will probably not recognize most of the brands here. Brands one might expect to see do appear including Fuji and UFO Noodles. Hills Bros coffee makes a surprise appearance, though perhaps less surprisingly in the home of an ex-pat.
Did we miss something?
buy The Incredibles
The Incredibles
Date:
5-18 Nov., 2004
Studio: Buena Vista
Weekend gross: US$120.8 M
Featured brands: Bose, Hai Karate, Life
Comments: Like Pixar’s previous hit Finding Nemo, The Incredibles gets by largely brand free, happy to do more product tie-ins than product placement. Notable is the appearance of the cologne Hai Karate, not made since the 70s. The cologne now seems to exist in memory as an “in joke,” farcically looking back on the pre-metrosexual men’s grooming market.
Did we miss something?
buy The Passion of the Christ
The Passion of the Christ
Date:
9-15 Apr., 2004
Studio: New Market Films
Weekend gross: US$15.2 M
Featured brands: none
Comments: Re: Brands, it goes without saying that there weren’t any... though many would say, and many have, that the entire film is one giant product placement.
The Passion re-entered at #1 three weeks after being unseated.

buy The Village
The Village
Date:

Studio: Buena Vista
Weekend gross: US$50.7 M
Featured brands: Land Rover
Comments: Yes, that brand appearance is what’s known as a spoiler. Sorry.
Did we miss something?
buy Troy
Troy
Date:
14-20 May., 2004
Studio: Warner Bros
Weekend gross: US$46.9 M
Featured brands: none
Comments: With prophylactics not yet invented, the Trojans and Greeks wage brand-free war.

buy Van Helsing
Van Helsing
