Bundaberg Rum
cocktail dreams by Ian Cocoran September 17, 2001
When sugar cane production first began in Australia toward the end of the 19th century, the locals of the Queensland village of Bundaberg could have only guessed at their fate. For as the sugar turned to alcohol, the quiet retreat of Bundaberg and Australia’s passion for rum were blended into a cocktail that’s still being served today and the quiet Queensland retreat, is known simply as “Bundy Town!”
The homepage of Bundaberg Rum is an animated version of the brand come to life with a host of “Bundy Town” icons and a tropical Queensland feel, which together make for a surfing experience last had by Crocodile Dundee. Each place of interest, such as the cinema and museum, act as gateways to information, allowing the viewer to take a look at the latest TV commercials (the Polar Bear in the Yellow-Cab is definitely worth a look). You can also catch up on your historical facts with an in-depth tour of the rum’s evolution.
If you’re into branded downloads then a trip to the laboratory will probably make your day, while a look inside the pub will enhance your repertoire of cocktails with such appetizing recipes as the “Bunyip” and the “Floater!”
Let’s be clear however, while the site is quite refreshing in its layout and its style, it also has its flaws and appears to lack new content. Examples of this can be found in the length of time it takes for certain areas to load and the official Bundy Notice Board updated sometime last year – perhaps a tell-tale sign (along with the registration of Bundabergrum.com) that we’re about to have an upgrade.
