Noos, the leading TV cable provider in France, offers a good example of a corporate website from a brand viewpoint. It is on the right track to becoming a benchmark site, if elementary mistakes on the front page can be fixed.

With the exception of the homepage, the site is generally well designed and easy to

 
use. Its use of Flash technology is smart and well integrated with the HTML pages. Web developers have learned from the excesses of the late 1990's – when sites like British e-tailer boo.com collapsed under the weight and complexity of cutting-edge technology.

 
 
Noos Modern, functional, clean, and light, the site gives an overall positive impression that fits well with the image of a modern company. Each page has a dominant background color, lightened by an elegant linear texture. Moreover, textured pictures of office furniture and employees at work blend rather well with the lines and curves of the site. The impression would be perfect if the textured background image did not interfere with the typeface of the menus.

Noos.com shows its attention to detail by nicely color-coordinating the top navigation bar on each page with the background of the page. Although this feature works only on Internet Explorer 5.5+ for PCs, it is so easy to implement that it is difficult to understand why its use is not widespread.

As should be expected, the Noos.com logo is prominently displayed on the top-left corner of the page. Most of the navigation menus are clearly visible on the left side and top of the page, where the user would expect them to be. The homepage, unfortunately, does not follow this layout, and the navigation buttons are scattered in a way that is most confusing and therefore unwelcoming. As often mentioned in this column, visual hierarchy is an important aspect of web design, and the site’s design should respect the already well-accepted convention of positioning navigation bars on the left and top of the page, where most users expect to find them.
