Will Facebook’s recent addition of community pages make it more relevant to brands?

Brands will get a big boost from the Official/Community Pages split. Users will now be able to verify brand impostors. I wouldn't be surprised if FB begins charging brands for Official Pages, ala Twitter's Promoted Tweets. One important distinction is that FB promises to hand over administration of Community Pages to the community once they become popular enough. This introduces wiki elements that may help pages continue to have life after admins lose interest.http://www.corey.com

Agree it will be a positive step. Facebook's sarch functionality is horrible so something needed to be done, Many marketers are beginning to pointing their campaigns to Facebook. And a bad search experience goes like this: Users forget the URL, search on Facebook and are bombarded with I HATE brand X instead of the brand page. Ouch.

If companies see this as another opportunity to simply publicize their brand and further their own interests, then I think they will witness a backlash. If on the other hand, they become contributors of a larger dialogue that is relevant to that community they will strengthen their equity.

While this is an opportunity for companies to take an 'official' position on brands - they need to be careful and not assume a broadcast paradigm, but use their 'official' status to become the 'go-to' place for community interaction. I am curious of how companies and competitors will position themselves for the advertising on those pages. Opportunities for some guerrilla advertising a-la Adwords? :)

This is a good move on Facebook's part to position their service as a positive for companies rather than a potential minefield of impostors. Facebook will be then better positioned for ad revenue growth. As many comments said though, companies need to ensure that their Facebook page stays true to the spirit of community interaction. Companies can learn alot from their community rather than just posting promotional messages.
