Ten Years of DTC: What's the Prognosis?

I worry that we're getting to see brands with the most money, not the best medicines!
Burton, Hogart, Mantor Express - June 29, 2007

The practice is banned in Europe because advertising direct to consumer for prescription drugs is a barbaric practice as would be advertising cigarettes on T.V. Listen to the end of the commercial (may cause diarrhea, vomiting, loss of hearing, internal bleeding, etc). The commercials have unusual artistic direction in most cases and then end with the scary risks associated with taking the product – not a good “call to action”, is it?

The drug companies have plenty of other avenues to market their product (i.e. like lobbying government). I think that is why we are debating this very topic in the first place.

At least we consumers are a bit more informed. And not solely dependant on the "push my drug and you'll go to Hawaii" Doctor recommendations.

How many of us buy Medicines with out a proper diagnosis and a Medical Practitioner's prescription ? I dont think, DTC would have helped the Drug Companies to escalate their Sales much.
Jathavedan, Executive - Business Development, RIPPLE Fragrances Pvt. Ltd - July 2, 2007

DTC advertising has given consumers the ability to find out about medicines they otherwise may never be aware of, and therefore the opportunity to discuss real options with their doctor.

Gone are the days, thank goodness, when patients simply took the medication prescribed by the doctor, no questions asked.

DTC has opened the door to more open and frank dialogue with Medical Practitioners, and surely this must be a good thing.

Let's not forget that many of the drugs advertised to consumers are "lifestyle drugs" - they don't treat life threatening illnesses, meaning many GP's are often ambivalent towards them, even though they can help their patients overall quality of life.

Propecia and Viagra are the two best known examples in this category.

One final thing - someone commented on only seeing the brands with the most money, not the best drugs; given that it takes around US$1 billion to get a drug to market, I'd argue the best drugs get the most money thrown into them...
