Holiday hysteria is officially upon us, and with it brings new attempts by brand marketers to break through the clutter, pitch new products, and attract the gift-buying public. And something intriguing is happening this year: Even online tech brands are reaching out to consumers via more traditional retail channels so they can serve up better customer experiences.
While most consumers may think of Google as the de facto standard search engine, the company is in fact as much into hardware as software; it owns smartphone-maker Motorola and also manufactures its own smartphones, tablets and laptops. These are products people need to see, feel, and play with_and that means the physical items need to be accessible.
Rather than enter the crowded retail store environment and compete for attention, Google's answer is to create its own environment in the form of Winter Wonderlab, not only a play on "Winter Wonderland" but also a unique pop-up store open for the holiday season in six locations: New York City, Paramus, NJ, Washington, DC, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Sacramento. Interestingly, except for the downtown New York location, the others are all located at malls run by Westfield. Swedish retail giant Hennes & Mauritz is gunning for its “coolly-minimal younger sibling,” COS, to make big a splash in the US market after building up quite a fanbase in Europe, Asia and the Middle East. The brand will make its debut in the spring, joining fast-fashion phenom H&M.
But the higher-priced, more artsy brand has no intention of settling for second place. According to H&M's head of business, Marie Honda, the high-fashion brand has the potential to be huge. After testing the waters earlier this month with a NYC pop-up shop at Opening Ceremony, the upscale, minimalist and cosmopolitan COS brand will target US ities "that have an international feel," Honda told Women's Wear Daily.
Come spring 2014, the brand plans to launch US e-commerce and open its first store in April in NYC's Soho neighborhood.
It’s a strategic shift for H&M, which launched in the US market as a trendy and cheaper alternative to Gap, Zara and Forever 21, and for whom American stores deliver the most revenue after Germany.Continue reading...

Lady Gaga’s latest album, ARTPOP, was released in conjunction with two pop-up stores (ARTPOP-ups, you might call them) in New York City and Los Angeles, dubbed "ARTPOP Pop Up: A Lady Gaga Gallery."
The gallery/shop installations feature Gaga-related items like the computer chair where she posed naked, her infamous meat dress and everyday items like albums and t-shirts. The ARTPOP gallery experience is sponsored by Ubisoft, creator of video game Just Dance 2014, which features two Gaga songs, Beats By Dr. Dre and Interscope, Gaga’s record label.
While it's all a highly orchestrated ploy to generate buzz and sales for the star's new album with the Jeff Koons cover, it’s also a multimedia art installation, with blank walls and artsy tools available for visitors to create their own masterpiece while a video wall projects Gaga and her quotes.
It paled in comparison to the brand-savvy singer's ARTPOP album release party in Brooklyn's Navy Yard on Sunday, an over-the-top spectacle that cost about $3 million to produce with the quiet aid of American Express, according to Billboard. (Two words: flying dress.)Continue reading...

Whether you’re playing ball on the playground or in an NBA arena, the basket’s rim typically sits 10 feet above ground, a height generally out of reach for average-sized men and women.
Some people, of course, can not only touch that rim but get up above it; a bunch of them are in the NBA, but there are plenty still out in the streets and Adidas and Chicago Bulls star Derrick Rose went out to find them.

Online jewelry retailer BaubleBar, founded by Harvard grads Amy Jain and Daniella Yacobovsky, launched its second US pop-up shop in New York’s Soho district in June. The Greene Street shop, which will remain open until August 13, follows the e-tailer's first shop in New York's Meatpacking district back in February.
The Soho shop features weekly special events on their website, including happy hours and book signings—all an effort to establish BaubleBar as an exciting destination online and off.
The e-tailer teamed up with digital agencies Gin Lane Media and Perch Interactive to enhance and personalize the customer experience, with the pop-up featuring touchscreens, a bar serving Godiva cocktails, its own App and more to help engage shoppers. Customers are encouraged to take photos and upload them via Olapic, a platform that places user-generated content directly on a brand’s website.Continue reading...

eBay is diving deeper into mobile-enabled, real-time shopping with the launch of "shoppable windows," which will bolster the site's partnership with physical retailers while capitalizing on the greater shift to on-the-go shopping.
The once online auction-only behemoth continues to expand its role as a middleman between consumers and retailers, following earlier pop-up shops and virtual storefronts. Last year saw the introduction of the mobile, same-day delivery shopping service eBay Now (which is relaunching on mobile) as well as partnerships with major retailers such as Macy's on mobile payments, and wooing major retailers like Target.
The first four windows will be open from June 8 through July 7 in New York City, each offering 30 items from the new Kate Spade Saturday collection, which was recently launched by Fifth & Pacific. The screens, which measure 9 feet across and 2 feet high, are placed on the front windows of closed stores, allowing shoppers to touch and order products, which are delivered within an hour via courier. HTC One, a.k.a. the Facebook Home phone that's coming to AT&T and other carriers, is just one focus of the company’s impending brand refresh and aggressive marketing campaign to get better market placement against competitors like Samsung.
HTC has been known for good hardware and not-so-good promotion, but squaring off against marketing-savvy Samsung requires the former to up its game. "It's one thing to make a great device—HTC has done that before," Mike Woodward, president of HTC America told the LA Times. "What is a little different this time is the way that we're going to market. We want to really get that down to the streets and get that down to consumers."
HTC had been using “quietly brilliant” as its slogan, but the brand is looking to step out of its shell with a new marketing message that has “bold,” “authentic” and “playful” themes. The new tagline, "Everything Your Phone Isn't," is courting "Generation Feed" (what HTC calls tech-savvy, early-adopters). "Tech millennials are hard to connect with," Erin McGee, HTC North America VP Marketing told Ad Age. "We wanted to create a closer connection by targeting passion points."Continue reading...

Murmurs were afoot early on the street and on the tweet, thanks to Taco Bell's Facebook hint that fans should head to a pop-up store at New York City's Ariston Flowers in the Chelsea neighborhood, setting the Twitterverse aflutter.
The product: new Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Tacos. The password: ask for the blue bouquet.
But just when things began to heat up at the flower shop, Taco Bell also was letting the whole country know about what likely will be its biggest new-product announcement of 2013. The Yum! Brands chain is hoping to tap into the same fervor for Cool Ranch as it did a year ago for the original Nacho Cheese flavored Doritos Locos Tacos, which kicked off a frenzy new Doritos-based-shell franchise.
And if the blue nail polish on today's Facebook announcement wasn't hint enough, Taco Bell is wooing the cool kids to Cool Ranch by appealing to hipsters — judging by its Super Bowl commercial, as a mindset and not necessarily just millennials.Continue reading...
