Move Over, Madonna: Jane Fonda's Back in a Leotard

Posted by Shirley Brady on December 10, 2010 10:00 AM

If Madonna's getting into the fitness business, it should come as no surprise that the original entertainer turned workout guru would return to the mat. Cue actress Jane Fonda, who recast her Hanoi Jane activist image (and bolstered her fortune) by adding fitness icon to her list of credits in the 1970's.

Sure enough, she's officially relaunching Jane Fonda's Workout, only this time she's joined by a handpicked cadre of trainers (dubbed "Team Fonda"). A new series of DVDs aimed at baby boomers and a related line of branded fitness equipment are launching at Target on Dec. 26 — just in time for all those New Year's resolutions.

She's been dipping her toe in the jacuzzi, introducing her new Jane Fonda Primetime fitness DVDs at Amazon and other retailers. As for why she's donning a leotard again, tells AP: "People who are of a certain age tend to be ignored by the fitness industry and being that I’m older and I’ve done a lot of research on what happens to a body when it gets older, I know that it’s essential that we stay active.

Fonda says she's also contemplating a regular acting gig, with a potential scripted series for cable. "I have a sort of a vision of what it could be and that’s all that I’ll say. I think the best, edgiest writing is now on cable television. It’s pretty exciting."
